Herb Robert

26th November 2020

Herb Robert - November 2020

It was quite a pleasant day for my photo shoot in dad's garden this week, with the grey skies of previous days giving way to the odd blue patch, and allowing an occasional glimpse of the sun.

Despite the lateness of the year, I was determined to find a few late flowers to photograph, and was very pleased to find a small patch of these lovely little Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum) blooms growing in a sheltered corner of the garden.

Budding Evening Primrose - November 2020

The Evening Primroses (Oenothera biennis) had finished flowering weeks ago, so I was quite surprised to find this one with new flower buds ready to open.

Blooming Green Alkanet - November 2020

Likewise, the Green Alkanet (Pentaglottis sempervirens) had all but disappeared from the garden, but I found a couple of patches in more sheltered areas that were springing into bloom.

Flowering Feverfew - November 2020

By contrast, the Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) plants had been flowering for quite a while, and didn't show any signs of stopping any time soon.

Winter Jasmine - November 2020

The Winter Jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) had only been flowering in earnest for a couple of weeks, and its branches were covered in flower buds, so it looked like it was going to be a good year for it.

Languishing Lacecap - November 2020

The Lacecap Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) bushes had lost the majority of their bracts, but the few that remained brought a little bit of welcome colour.

Once a Nerine - November 2020

The Nerines (Nerine bowdenii) hadn't lasted long this year, mostly because of bad timing, as they'd flowered during a period of persistent torrential rain and galeforce winds. This was all that was left of the once beautiful flower stems.

Roast Beef Plant - November 2020

I've posted images of the seeds of the Roast-beef Plant (Iris foetidissima) over the past few weeks, so this week I thought I'd share a shot of the overall plant. As you can see, it's not a looker, and the colourful seeds are definitely the highlight!

Berry Cluster - November 2020

The Firethorn (Pyracantha) bushes were still hanging onto their berries, which was a bit perplexing as the Blackbirds have usually stripped the bushes bare by now.

Leafy Abstract - November 2020

Being autumn, it's always tempting to post photos of leaves, and I don't want to disappoint, so here is the obligatory abstract leaf shot.

Early Catkins - November 2020

Finally, the Catkins were coming along nicely on the Corkscrew Hazel Tree (Corylus avellana 'Contorta'), and were well on track to be ready to release their pollen by springtime next year.

So this week I went with Herb Robert as my Image of the Week simply because it was nice to see the little blooms still doing their thing so late in the year...
